Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said he was speechless that the Labour Party had recorded the largest landslide victory in the MEP elections, revealing that his party’s projections shows a 55% majority (a 45,000 vote gap) for the PL.

Speaking on TVM, Muscat that the country has once again puts its faith in the government and rejected the negativity and scaremongering of the Nationalist Party.

Celebrations have already kicked off in the counting halls.

Surveys had previously indicated a 15% margin between the two main parties.

PN Leader Adrian Delia has long insisted that he would stay regardless of the result. However, serious questions have to be asked in the face of such a damaging defeat, especially given that Prime Minister Joseph Muscat presented the vote as a clear choice between the pair.

With the current margin, a 4-2 seat majority in the PL’s favour is highly likely. However, a 5-1 drubbing still remains on the cards.

The official final turnout for the European Parliament election is 72.6%, a 2% decrease from 2014. This is the lowest turnout ever in an EP election in Malta.

Independent MP Hermann Schiavone, a member within PN Leader Adrian Delia’s inner circle and electoral system expert, had earlier said:

“The PN has a difficult day ahead of them. It looks like the PL is going to win by a huge margin. This happened because of a faction in the PN who decided not to vote. On the other hand, the PL managed to mobilise the voter base.”
