Prince Edward Visits Dar tal-Providenza And Meets Malta’s Paralympic Community
It’s not every day that royalty drops by for a chat.
HRH Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, made a special visit to Id-Dar tal-Providenza in Siġġiewi, bringing a mix of excitement and warmth to everyone present.
During his visit, Prince Edward met with Maltese para-athletes, residents of the home, volunteers, and various sports communities, making it a day to remember for everyone involved.

The Duke was warmly welcomed by Fr Martin Micallef, Director of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, and Prof. Joseph N. Grima, President of the Malta Paralympic Committee, alongside Mgr Joseph Galea-Curmi, Auxiliary Bishop of Malta, and government officials, including Minister Julia Farrugia and Graziella Galea.
Prince Edward’s visit also shone a spotlight on Malta’s para sports community. He spent time with players from Malta Wheelchair Basketball and Frame Football, and enjoyed a lively wheelchair dance performance led by Pippa Roberts in Dar tal-Providenza’s main hall.
He also met with rowers and para-rowers from the Siġġiewi Rowing Club, who shared insights into their inclusive training approach that allows athletes with various abilities to train side-by-side.
The visit concluded with a heartwarming certificate ceremony for winners of the “Paris 2024 Paralympic Games Schools Competition,” a project that brought together eight local schools and over 50 enthusiastic students.
The initiative, aimed at promoting inclusivity and fostering a love for adaptive sports among the younger generation, is just one of the many ways the Malta Paralympic Committee is building a legacy for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Id-Dar tal-Providenza, which offers a family-like environment for individuals with disabilities, was a fitting location for this special visit.
Fun fact: the premises once served as a Royal Navy Rest Camp until 1962, making this visit by Prince Edward even more symbolic.
