Prison Correctional Officer Assaulted By Prisoner At Kordin As Police Report Filed
A prison correctional officer was recently assaulted by a prisoner at Kordin, the union representing law enforcement officers warned.
The incident was flagged by the General Workers Union’s Disciplinary Corps, Security and Law Enforcement Officials branch last Friday.
“A correctional officer suffered some injuries when he was assaulted by a prisoner at his workplace,” the union said, confirming that a police report has been filed and pledging to offer the officer all the necessary assistance.
The case was also flagged by Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms Rebecca Buttigieg during an interview with Andrew Azzopardi on 103 Malta’s Heart.
Buttigieg brought up the case when Azzopardi – a prison reform advocate – asked her why the government took so long to heed concerns that he, Peppi Azzopardi and certain media houses had raised about the situation of the prison under its former director Alex Dalli.
Dalli, who was renowned for his disciplinary demeanour, resigned as prison director last year following an inquiry into an inmate’s suicide and was replaced by Robert Brincau.
“Decisions were taken and inquiries were carried out but we cannot say that everything in prison must be in favour of certain things,” Buttigieg said coyly as she brought up the recent attack on a correctional officer.
“While prison should be a place of reform and rehabilitation, we must ensure that discipline remains in place and that prison officers are protected because they’re there to make a living and not to place their own lives at risk.”
