‘Prison Should Not Be A Hotel’: Daphne Caruana Galizia’s Killer Files New Leave Request For Daughter’s Birthday

Daphne Caruana Galizia’s convicted killer, George Degiorgio, has reportedly filed yet another prison leave request to be present for his daughter’s birthday.

This comes just weeks after Degiorgio was allowed out of prison to attend a family baptism by Malta’s authorities – an ordeal that triggered widespread condemnation.

The European Centre for Press and Media freedom was the one to leak news of the new request on Tuesday, stressing that prison should not be treated like a hotel.

“George Degiorgio, one of Daphne’s killers insists on being released every month to attend parties while he is supposed to serve 40 years. Maltese authorities should make sure he does his time. Prison should not be a hotel where people come and go as they, please,” it said on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the IPI – Global Network for Independent Media also demanded that prison authorities immediately reject his “absurd and insulting” request.

And finally, the European Federation for Journalists also joined in on the calls, “demanding Maltese authorities immediately reject this insulting request from the murderer of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia”.

Last October, the DeGiorgio brothers pleaded guilty to murdering Caruana Galizia, being sentenced to 40 years in prison.

George and Alfred Degiorgio were arrested in December 2017, along with Vince Muscat, who was last year sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for the murder as part of a plea deal.

Do you think convicted killers should be allowed in and out of prison?
