Five representative of a major pro-life lobby group met Prime Minister Robert Abela at Castille, a few days after they publicly criticised him for ignoring their request for a meeting about a bill that would allow abortions in cases where a prospective mother’s life or health is at risk.

The ‘Inti Tista‘ Ssalvani’ movement met with Abela, Health Minister Chris Fearne, Justice Minister Jonathan Attard and Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms Rebecca Buttigieg at Castille yesterday to discuss a proposed abortion bill.

The movement was represented by Miriam Sciberras and Tonio Fenech from Life Network Foundation, as well as Konrad Borg, Daniel Farrugia and Helga Consiglio from Doctors for Life

“The Coalition presented its concerns around the Bill presented to Parliament and explained why in its present form introduces abortion on demand. The coalition reiterated its position as explained fully in the website salvani.eu,” it said.

“The coalition is not opposed to improving the current law to provide more clarity and protection to doctors and women who face life-threatening complications during a pregnancy and who need medical intervention that could endanger a baby’s life.”

“The coalition is hopeful that the Government will be receptive to its position.”

Four days earlier, the coalition publicly had publicly criticised Abela for ignoring their request for a meeting, stating they had requested one on 1st December 2022 but were left hanging.

They also called out Health Minister Chris Fearne for his recent statement that the “hype and frenzy” over the bill has settled down

“It is unfortunate that Minister Fearne chose to portray the genuine and rational concerns of so many Maltese as ‘hype and frenzy’ simply because they don’t take him blindly at his word and recognize that the current proposal has inherent and potential dangers to be abused and that cosmetic changes and reassurances on his part do little to change that,” the coalition said.
