Pro-Life Doctors Call Out Pro-Choice Gynaecologist For Trying To Influence Andrea Prudente’s Consultant

Pro-life activist group Doctors for Life has accused pro-choice gynaecologist Isabel Stabile of “audacity” when she spoke to the consultant entrusted with Andrea Prudente, the US tourist whose hospital experience triggered a revamp of Malta’s abortion laws.

Doctors for Life spoke out after gynaecologist Alberto Vella, who took care of Prudente during her time at Mater Dei, and Yves Muscat Baron, who heads Mater Dei’s Maternity and Gynaecology Department, testified in a constitutional case Prudente opened against the Maltese state.

Muscat Baron testified that Vella was worried because Stabile had contacted him to warn him that Prudente was in danger and that “you know what to do”. The department head convened a case conference with two other specialists to discuss the Prudente case, where it was decided that there was nothing untoward about the way the case had been handled.

“Prof. Stabile, one of the leading abortion lobbyists, went one step further than advocacy when she had the audacity to attempt to influence the management of the caring consultant by allegedly contacting him personally and pressuring him with the words – ‘You know what to do’,” Doctors for Life said.

Prudente and her partner were on a ‘babymoon’ in Malta when her umbilical cord prolapsed. Muscat Baron testified that her umbilical cord was protruding from her cervix, and that while doctors gave her antibiotics, they expected the foetus’ heart to stop.

However, an ultrasound the following day found that her cervix had closed and no cord was visible. Muscat Baron said that this was probably because Prudente got to rest in bed, stating that this often solves such issues.

He played down concerns that she was at risk of developing an infection, noting that her white blood cell count never exceeded 14, when it runs up to 20-25 in cases of infection.

Questioned by Prudente’s lawyer Lara Dimitrijevic about whether her client could have developed sepsis, Muscat Baron said the risk of this was around 1% in cases of ruptured membranes, with the mortality rate a meagre 0.1%.

Vella testified that while Prudente had lost her amniotic fluid, it wouldn’t have been unusual if her ruptured membrane had repaired itself and refilled with fluid. He said that while her baby didn’t have a “great chance” of living, it was a chance nonetheless.

Doctors for Life said that the recent sitting shows that a “pro-abortion lobby had no reservations with feeding the media a concoction of conjecture and fear-mongering in the hope that this might mobilise the public and politicians to answer their repeated calls for the introduction of abortion”.

“We trust that parliamentarians will take into account what was revealed in Court last Friday, when the amendment to the abortion law is discussed in the coming days. We must not forget that this amendment was proposed in reaction to Ms. Prudente’s case as it was being misrepresented in the media at the time,” the pro-life group said.

“The foetus is a living human being worthy of the continued protection of our Law. The new amendment must ensure the safety of the mother’s life but it must also protect the unborn child against intentional and direct harm. We trust that MPs will do the right thing and ensure that the new amendment gives peace of mind to all involved.”
