Joseph Cuschieri has been announced as CEO of Project Green, succeeding Steve Ellul, who has stepped down ahead of his expected MEP candidature.

“We have challenging and exciting times ahead and I am keen to keep building on the good work carried out by my predecessor Steve Ellul,” Cuschieri said.

“Together with the team at Project Green, I will endeavour to develop and implement innovative and quality green projects which add value and a better environment to the communities in Malta and Gozo.”

Project Green was formed after the last general election as part of the PL government’s pre-electoral pledge to spend €700 million on creating new green spaces in built-up areas.

This is the third government body that Cuschieri has been placed in charge of.

He had led the Malta Gaming Authority from 2013 until 2018, when he was appointed CEO of the Malta Financial Services Authority.

However, he stepped down from the role in 2020 following revelations that he had taken a trip to Las Vegas in 2018 with Daphne Caruana Galizia murder suspect Yorgen Fenech, and that Fenech had paid for his flights and accommodation.
