Pressure group Repubblika have called for a protest tomorrow in Republic Street, Valletta at 6pm in light of a new court order to investigate author Mark Camilleri after he published chats that had a ban placed on them.

Announcing the protest, Repubblika President Robert Aquilina said the country had “returned to a situation where a member of parliament, the Attorney General and the Police Commissioner are working together to throw a journalist in prison”.

“We learnt nothing from the assassination of Daphne,” Aquilina said in reference to the 2017 murder of the Maltese journalist. “This isn’t democracy.”

Nationalist Party Leader Bernard Grech reacted to the order, calling out the speed authorities worked on this case in comparison with other criminal cases.

“Instead of investigating those who do bad, they investigate those who uncover the bad,” Grech said. “Impunity and collusion.”

Their reactions come after Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà was ordered by a judge to take criminal action against Camilleri over the leaked Yorgen Fenech chats featuring intimate and political discussions between the businessman and MP Rosianne Cutajar.

Though a 2021 court ban is in place, Camilleri published over 2,000 messages taken from WhatsApp chats between the two on his website.

The at-times salacious messages have been at the centre of national discussion over the last few days, with Prime Minister Robert Abela reacting by calling out Roberta Metsola for associating with a misogynist, referring to Camilleri.

The judge – who was not named – made the order after Cutajar’s lawyers filed an urgent application requesting an investigation into how the WhatsApp messages were obtained and published by Camilleri.
