Protestors demanding justice for assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia have staged an action to coincide with the government’s dismissal of a Bill to outlaw foreign libel lawsuits against Maltese journalists.

On the walls of Castille, the protestors from Il-Kenniesa stuck copies of the 34 libel cases by government officials and supporters against Caruana Galizia that were left pending at the time of her assassination last October. The papers include large splotches of red, resembling blood.

“While [justice minister] Owen Bonnici slams down the anti-SLAPP bill this evening, 34 libel cases against Daphne Caruana Galizia have been placed on the office of Joseph Muscat,” Il-Kenniesa said.

The anti-SLAPP law was presented in Parliament by Opposition MP Jason Azzopardi as a reaction to threats by Pilatus Bank and Henley & Partners to sue Maltese journalists in the USA and the UK, where libel penalties and legal costs are significantly higher than they are in Malta. However, Bonnici insisted the proposed Bill violates EU law and tabled advice from the Attorney General, Maltese lawyers Ian Refalo and Paul Cachia and British law firm Bird & Bird to back up his legal argument.
