Medical experts were called to court today as the case regarding US citizen Andrea Prudente and her pregnancy issues on the island picks up steam.

The head of obstetrics and gynaecology at Mater Dei, Yves Muscat Baron, stated that Prudente’s pregnancy may in fact have been viable.

Mucast Baron said that Prudente’s pregnancy could have resulted in the baby living based on the fact that foetuses’ have a good survival rate despite the rupturing of the amniotic sac, which occurred in this case.

He also said that the foetus could survive on very little amniotic fluid and that the amniotic sac could repair itself.

It was noted that as per procedure, a bereavement midwife was brought in to support the Prudentes as a proactive measure should the foetus not survive.

The bereavement midwife and Muscat Baron both mentioned in their testimony that Prudente was anxious and had previously suffered from a “psychological issue”.

The trial is set to continue in February.
