Alicia Bugeja Said, the parliamentary secretary of animal rights, has commented on the recent discovery of four lions and a panther living in unsuitable conditions in Naxxar.

This is what she had to say.

“The recent case where dangerous animals were allegedly found in inadequate conditions is concerning. Personally and on behalf of the Government, I strongly condemn any form of animal cruelty.”

“I am commenting now that more facts have been established, while ensuring that I do not prejudice the ongoing investigation in any way. The Ministry’s officials have all the regulatory tools at their disposal to investigate and, where necessary, prosecute cases of animal cruelty.”

“I remind everyone that the keeping and transfer of dangerous animals to and within Malta is strictly regulated, including through stronger laws implemented by the Government in October 2024. These regulations prohibit the introduction of any new dangerous animals into our country unless it is for research purposes or part of an animal species conservation program.”

“The Government is determined to ensure that the investigative, regulatory, and enforcement channels are always available and applicable in all circumstances involving animal cruelty.”

“The priority at this moment, in this specific case, is to ensure the well-being of the animals found, providing them with care and veterinary assistance, while identifying an appropriate location where they can be relocated. I thank all officials for their dedicated work.”
