Five years after the historic DAR Bjorn was opened in Qormi, the building has been dedicated to one of the key players raising ALS awareness in Malta – Maria Formosa.

Formosa, the executive secretary of ALS Malta and the wife of ALS activist Bjorn Formosa, was recently named Woman of the Year at an award ceremony earlier this month – and now, the Qormi home has been dedicated to Formosa, with a new plaque unveiled the home “Maria’s Chapter”.

“From today onwards, this home will be dedicated to my wife Maria, for her impeccable work and infinite support she gave me to open the first ever neurological home to exist in Malta,” Bjorn said on the occasion.

Bjorn was able to attend the ceremony after his recent recovery in hospital, getting out just in time.

Aside from the ALS team and the 13 resident of Dar Bjorn, Minister for Inclusion and Social Wellbeing Julia Farrugia Portelli as well as Natalie Briffa, Joseph Massini, Peppi Azzopardi and Peter Busuttil were present.

The home houses patients suffering from various conditions such as ALS, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and many more. After opening its doors in 2017, DAR Bjorn has given patients a sense of dignity and their families peace of mind and seeing the large volume of people requiring these services, a second DAR Bjorn will be opening its doors in the coming months.
