Two experienced Maltese microlight pilots got off with only a few scratches as they successfully performed an emergency crash landing in a field in Luqa this morning.

Richard Bezzina and Diżma Gauci, both members of the Island Micro Light Club for plane enthusiasts, were flying a light aircraft at around 9:15am when it suffered engine failure.

Although they were only a few metres away from the Luqa runway, the pilots immediately decided to perform a crash landing in a nearby field – a safer option to crashing on a runway or in a built-up area.

“We didn’t have much time to think, so we just thought on our feet and decided to crash-land in a field,” Gauci told The Times of Malta.

Police officers, Civil Protection Department officials and ambulances were sent on site and one of the two men was reportedly hospitalised for a while.
