Random Drug Testing At Work, Saliva Swabs On The Road As Malta Announces ‘Zero Tolerance’ Policy

A new drug policy promises “zero tolerance” towards drug users in Malta, with random drug testing to be enforced on drivers.

The new policy was announced by Social Policy Minister Michael Falzon and Professor Richard Muscat in a presser today.

Though the Reforms Ministry decriminalised the use of cannabis recently and is currently working with ARUC to open cannabis association across the island, the Social Policy Ministry said that one of the drugs it was focused on was cannabis.

Combining decriminalised cannabis with illegal cocaine, authorities said that new testing methods, including saliva swab tests, will be able to detect if drivers are driving under the influence.

The test will be unable to detect cannabis from previous days.

Random testing was also being promoted in the workplace, with users facing career punishments or even dismissal following the new results.

A timeline for the rollout of the test was not given.

What do you make of the new policy?
