Recreational Hall In Mosta School Left Unavailable And Filled With COVID-19 Supplies For Three Years

A school recreational hall often used for musical activities has been left unavailable for almost three years after it was transformed into a storage space for COVID-19 supplies.

Speaking to Lovin Malta, staff members from the Lily of the Valley government school in Mosta, part of the Maria Regina College, raised alarm bells about the takeover, warning that it is negatively impacting the school’s ethos.

“Basically the halls are filled with boxes stacked up to the hall’s ceiling and they are filled with health and hospital resources,” the staff members told Lovin Malta.

The hall is equipped with a stage and a sound room and was often used for a variety of activities, such as talent shows, musical theatre, pantos, and even for sports during bad weather.

“We have been missing plenty of student opportunities which negatively impacts the school ethos and the school environment,” they explained.

“There is also a probability that the boxes will not be removed prior to the commencement of school in a few weeks.”

“The hall has been closed for nearly three years now, and another major concern that we are afraid of is that we will probably need to do extensive refurbishment as termites might have attacked the wood on stage due to the hall being packed with cardboard boxes and it is always closed in the dark.”

The staff member also claimed that to their knowledge, the school halls at the Żokrija school and the secondary school of Imrieħel are also experiencing the same thing.

“In my opinion, it is not beneficial for schools to leave all these halls packed with supplies. They should have been moved last year to a location where they can be stored without putting stress on schools, headmasters, principals, teachers and most of all students,” they stressed.

Malta seems to have recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, with the majority of activities back to pre-pandemic levels. However, certain sectors are still experiencing strains brought on by the pandemic.

Lovin Malta also reached out to the Health Ministry for a comment on the matter, however, no response was given at the time of publishing.

Do you think an adequate place needs to be found for such supplies?
