Recycling Isn’t Enough Anymore – Here Are Four Anti-Plastic Maltese Initiatives We Love

Article Featured Image

People think that recycling alone will save the world – it won’t.

Many plastic items collected as recycling end up not actually recycled, instead ending up in landfills or getting burned down due to the lack of demand from companies for recycled plastic.

The ultimate solution is to turn off the plastic tap.

So what do you do when the one thing you’ve been hearing all your life -”recycle, recycle, recycle” may not be enough by itself? Look at other methods that work.

Here are four Maltese initiatives we love which are doing their part in reducing plastic waste:

1. ReRoot’s sustainable shop

ReRoot is a one stop shop for all things plastic free. They offer a wide range of products, starting from skincare products to food to books to fashion.

2. Malta National Aquarium’s awareness campaign

The aquarium has a designated area to inform the public all about the dangers of plastic, and how the earth has a hard time digesting them – “Reduce Plastic And Help Save A Life”.

3. Core Green’s organic grocery shop

Core Green is an organic grocery store in Qawra, that allows customers to buy ingredients and cleaning products in bulk, using their own reusable bags. They also sell chocolate wrapped in paper.

4. Neil Agius’ Wave of Change

Whilst Agius will be attempting a world-first record attempt in the longest unassisted open water sea swim with no breaks, his campaign will be picking up plastic along the way, as part of his change of change initiative.

Even with Malta’s new BCRS machines, it’s clear that recycling is not enough.

What other companies/campaigns/organisations promoting the importance of reducing plastic do you know of?
