New Reform Will See Abortion Allowed In Malta When Mother’s Health Is At Risk

A newly proposed reform to Malta’s abortion laws will see the intervention allowed when a mother’s health is at risk.
Health Minister Chris Fearne revealed the reform on Wednesday, with the amendments set to be tabled in parliament this week.
The reform will allow doctors to terminate a pregnancy in the case that the pregnancy is posing a threat to the woman’s health.
The legal amendment is set to outline that if a pregnancy is terminated while the mother’s health is at risk, the doctor or the patient will not risk facing criminal charges.
Fearne also clarified that the consent of the woman would still be necessary in order for the abortion to go through.
This comes after American tourist Andrea Prudente was denied an emergency abortion in Malta even though pregnancy was given a “zero-success” rate.
