Remember That Policeman Who Celebrated Daphne Caruana Galizia’s Murder? He’s Still A Policeman

The policeman who celebrated Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination with a smug Facebook status has not been fired from the force as a disciplinary investigation into his post is still ongoing.

Police sergeant Ramon Mifsud drew outrage with his Facebook post on the 16th October last year, which read: “Everyone gets what they deserve, co-dung!!!! Feeling happy :)”.

Mifsud was promptly suspended from the police force on half-pay, pending an internal investigation by a disciplinary board and a follow-up by the Public Service Commission. Lovin Malta is informed that proceedings haven’t started yet because Mifsud has been deemed not mentally fit to testify.

However, a police spokesperson confirmed with Lovin Malta that the disciplinary board has not yet given its verdict eight months down the line and that Mifsud is still suspended from the police force pending a decision.

There is still no news as to whether the police intend to prosecute Mifsud for his Facebook post.

The police force’s dragging of feet in the Mifsud case is in sharp contrast with how they had recently promptly arrested three people for posting derogatory Facebook comments against the police force, and prosecuted them for incitement of violence. They were initially denied bail and therefore kept in jail for eleven days.
