One of Malta’s most renowned exorcists, Fr Elija Vella, has died at the age of 81.

The Maltese Franciscan Conventuals announced the priest’s death this afternoon, while the St Paul’s Bay parish said it will dedicate this evening’s mass in his honour.

Fr Vella was President of the Diocesan Commission on Occult and Satanism, an official church organisation that was set up in 1995 to study occultism, spiritism and satanism from a theological point of view.

He wrote a number of books on the occult, such as Satana and Diavoli e esorcismi, and spoke about the topic in the media, warning last year that the celebration of Halloween “encroaches into the devil’s territory”.

Several people have paid tribute to Fr Vella, with Opposition Leader Bernard Grech praising him for his work helping people.
