The director of the British bureau of Reporters Without Borders arrived in Malta to monitor and scrutinise the 34 ongoing libel cases against Daphne Caruana Galizia, which the assassinated journalist’s family have demanded proceed.

The court today convened to hear 19 libel cases filed against Caruana Galizia by hotelier Silvio Debono over her reports on the ITS land transfer and two by tourism minister Konrad Mizzi over her reports on the Panama Papers. Other cases were supposed to be discussed today as well, but were put off due to a lawyer’s illness.

And Rebecca Vincent from the RSF was in court tweeting about the cases, which were postponed – Mizzi’s because his lawyer asked for more time and Debono’s because one of his witnesses – Projects Malta CEO James Camenzuli – failed to show up. Camenzuli was found in contempt of court and will be brought to court under arrest to testify in the next sitting in May.

“A frustrating waste of time for all involved, and just a glimpse of what Daphne Caruana Galizia was facing at the time of her murder,” Vincent said in a tweet.

Vincent will tomorrow address an action outside Parliament organised by RFB and protest group Il-Kenniesa to mark the tenth anniversary since Caruana Galizia launched her blog ‘Running Commentary’.

Il-Kenniesa is encouraging people to bring along a Caruana Galizia article that resonated with them and read it out to the crowd.
