Repubblika Changes Monthly Daphne Vigil Time To Avoid Clash With PN Protest On Thursday

NGO Repubblika will hold its monthly vigil for Daphne Caruana Galizia one hour later than usual on Thursday so as to avoid a clash with a Nationalist Party protest which will be held that evening.

Since Caruana Galizia was assassinated on 16th October 2017, Repubblika has been holding a truth and justice vigil every 16th of the month outside the law courts, usually at 6:30pm.

However, on 16th January at 6pm, the PN is also holding a protest outside Parliament against the Vitals-Steward deal, with the date and time chosen to coincide with a debate on an Opposition motion against the concession.

Repubblika president Robert Aquilina confirmed with Lovin Malta that, following discussions with the PN, the NGO agreed to hold the vigil at 7:30pm this week.

“It wouldn’t have made sense to hold them both at the same time,” he said.

Aquilina stressed that Repubblika and PN are separate organisations with different roles and the NGO’s statute forbids its executive members (including himself) from attending activities organised by political parties.

The PN’s protest this Thursday will be its third demonstration against the Vitals-Steward concession since a court annulled it following a case filed by PN MP and former leader Adrian Delia.

“If you have been feeling heartbroken for a while and feel weak by yourself, you can feel strong once more together with your Maltese siblings,” Grech told a PN rally last weekend.

“United with everyone, you can be stronger than corrupt politicians and those who got into government with the intention of stealing. We have a duty to keep speaking out and giving hope and together it’s possible to find courage. This is the moment for people to have faith. People have a right to make their voices heard and we have a duty to strengthen their voice.”
