Revealed Year 3 Maths Homework Causes Parent Backlash And PN MP Standing Up For Maltese Teacher

Nationalist MP Justin Schembri has stood up for a Year 3 teacher after a parent of one of her students criticised her for giving out maths homework that was too easy.

This week, a parent published a copy of her daughter’s maths homework on the popular Are You Being Served Facebook group.

The homework took on the form of a Join The Dots challenge, asking children to count from 1 to 100 to form the image of a lion and to colour the final picture.

“Do you think this should be homework for Year 3 students?” the mother asked.

However, her post was met with a backlash, with several people criticising her for publicly casting doubt on the teacher’s abilities and for not even covering the teacher’s name in her initial post.

Amongst the critics was Schembri, a teacher by profession, and the PN’s shadow education minister.

“Just because she’s a teacher, we cast doubt on her and ask Facebook users for advice. As if this is the ideal forum to raise these issues. If you had an issue, it would have been better to speak to the teacher directly. We accept everything from other professionals but not from teachers.”

A number of teachers also pointed out that the homework was actually well in line with the Learning Outcome Framework for Year 3 students, which stipulate that teachers must teach them how to count whole numbers up to 100.

Several people also praised the teacher for coming up with a creative and fun way to teach her class how to count.

Do you think it’s fair for parents to publicly question their children’s homework?
