Tributes are pouring in for Rita Ellul, mother of three from Iklin, who is believed to have been killed by her partner over Carnival weekend in Gozo.

Ellul’s body was found in a home in Triq Dun Franġisk Mizzi, Għajnsielem, at around noon on Saturday. However, following an autopsy, the death is now being treated as a homicide, with a man set to be charged with her murder today at 1.30pm.

Malta has reacted in shock to the news, with some questioning whether this is another case of femicide in Malta in 2022.

Sefora Tabone shared a powerful poem in dedication to Ellul, recounting the tears she shed when she heard the horrific news.

Ellul is believed to have been strangled to death, the Times of Malta reported, with police sources saying the victim may have been suffocated with her bed’s duvet.

Police arrested two men initially – a Ghanaian and a Maltese man – with the murder. The Ghanaian is set to be charged today.

“Rest in peace, you’ve left us speechless.”

Ellul is being remembered as courageous woman who showed strength throughout her life, with her loved ones now calling for justice to be served in the face of her murder.

“No woman deserves to die like that!”
