Robert Abela And Labour Support Drops As PN Makes Minor Progress In New Survey

A new survey has revealed the Labour Party’s support has dropped to its lowest in years as the Nationalist Party makes little headway – with people saying they no longer intend to vote skyrocketing.
The survey, published by Times of Malta and carried out by market research firm Esprimi among 600 people, gives a clear indication of where the electorate’s preferences lie one year on since Labour’s landslide 2022 electoral victory.
1. Robert Abela’s trust rating at all-time low – but still more trusted than Bernard Grech.
Abela’s trust rating has dropped to under 5/10 – previously, it had never dipped below 6.5.
Even among Labourites, his rating has dropped from 8.1 a year ago to 6.8. However, this remains higher than trust in Grech which dropped even further to 3.8 after being found at 4.2 last year.

2. The Labour Party’s support has decreased overall as well.
The PL enjoys 51.6% support, down 3.5% when compared to a year ago, though still enjoying a majority of voters’ support.

3. PN makes minor gains.
Though it’s been a year since the election and several government scandals have been made public, the PN gained just 1.2%, now enjoying 42.9% support.

Nationalist Leader Bernard Grech
4. There is a 23,000 vote difference between the two parties right now.
There’s a 23,000 vote, or 8.7%, gap between parties, much lower than the 39,474 vote difference found in the 2022 election.

5. Non-voters nearly triple to 27%
One of the biggest takeaways from the survey is people’s perceived disinterest in supporting any party, with nearly 27% of people saying they do not intend to vote compared to 10% in 2022.
This comes as third parties see a sizeable rise in support, with 5.5% saying they’d vote for them, two points higher than last year.
In the wake of a damning court verdict on the Steward-Vitals deal and leaks revealing the intimate ties between Maltese MPs and businessmen, it’s no surprise that voters are getting tired of questionable ethics in mainstream politics.
With the MEP elections set for next year, only time will tell if the latest voting trends will be reflected in election results.
