A strongly-worded statement by the Nationalist Party has accused Prime Minister Robert Abela of breaking his promise to implement the recommendations tabled by the public inquiry into the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, further sowing the seeds of a culture of impunity in the Maltese Islands.

The Nationalist Party claims that he has allowed the report to gather dust for 19 months and has so far not even implemented a single recommendation laid out by the three judges.

“This is not a coincidence”, the statement goes on to say.

“It is a plan by Abela to protect his friends and allies from 10 years of fraud, malfeasance and bribery. The Prime Minister is doing everything in his power to wipe out the memory of Caruana Galizia and the scandals she uncovered including the Panama Papers, Vitals, Pilatus Bank, Electrogas and many others.”

“The institutions of our country, especially the Attorney General and the Police Commissioner are still under the control of the Prime Minister. So far they have not brought forward a single politician to face justice. Meanwhile he has also taken control of the Commissioner for Standards in Public Life.”

Last July, the Nationalist Party put forward a draft law for the second time to implement the recommendations of the public inquiry. After eight months the Prime Minister has refrained from tabling this draft law on the parliamentary agenda.

Today, on the 65th month’s anniversary of Caruana Galizia’s assassination, the Nationalist Party condemns the irresponsible and abusive behaviour of the prime minister which is insulting to the memory of Caruana Galizia. They allege that he is neglecting his duties and obligations to assure good governance and rule of law.

This statement was presented by shadow justice minister Karol Aquilina in the name of the Nationalist Party.
