The murder of Karin Grech was an act of “political terrorism”, Prime Minister Robert Abela said today on the 45th anniversary of the assassination that rocked the island.

In a press conference near the San Ġwann memorial dedicated to the murdered 15-year-old’s memory, Abela recounted the dynamics surrounding the death which the courts had described as a “political murder” at the time.

Noting that she was killed as her father, Professor Edwin Grech, was serving in Maltese hospitals, Abela said that as a society, we must send a strong message that these kinds of cases are not welcome in this country, and that “division and hate must never be allowed to win”.

“We must work on the values of peace, respect and recognising that which brings us together,” he said.

If Karin Grech hadn’t been murdered, she would be 60 today.

On 28th December 1977, a brown envelope containing a package in Christmas wrapping was posted to Prof. Edwin Grech at his San Ġwann home. Karin spotted it, assumed it was a late Christmas present, and opened it up.

However, the ‘present’ turned out to be a bomb, which exploded in Karin’s face in front of her brother’s eyes, dying in the hospital half an hour later. The case remains unsolved.
