Malta has officially entered a new digital era with the launch of its first High Performance Computer (HPC), a major milestone that promises to drive innovation across fields like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, climate modelling, fintech, and aerospace.

Prime Minister Robert Abela, who officially launched the system, described the HPC as a cornerstone of Malta’s digital transformation.

“At the heart of this system lies cutting-edge technology, but its real strength lies in what it can do for our people,” Dr Abela said. “It will empower breakthroughs in AI, biotech, climate science, and more.”

The supercomputer serves as the centrepiece of DiHubMT, Malta’s European Digital Innovation Hub led by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA).

Through this initiative, businesses and start-ups will be able to “test before they invest,” giving them access to advanced digital tools previously only available abroad.

Minister for the Economy Silvio Schembri called it a “moment of opportunity” for researchers and innovators, highlighting how the new system removes barriers to innovation.

“For too long, access to this kind of computing power was only possible abroad and came at a high cost. From today, those barriers are gone,” he said.

Minister for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi noted that the project, co-financed by the European Union, represents another major step toward a knowledge-based, digital economy, strengthening Malta’s research capacity and competitiveness.

Dr Abela added that this investment aligns with Malta Vision 2050, a long-term plan focused on sustainability, innovation, and quality of life and sends a clear message that Malta is investing in its digital future.
