Robert Abela: ‘We Will Have The Youngest, Most Female And Most Talented Cabinet’

Prime Minister Robert Abela has hinted at what he sees as the future of this government’s cabinet during a political address in Isla today.

“This is still the beginning of our work – this government is different than what we had in January, and we’ve shown that we are open to all changes that make us better than we were,” Abela said.

“This government isn’t afraid of change,” he went on to say, before going on to speak about the expected imminent cabinet reshuffle.

“This cabinet will be the youngest, most female-represented and most talented cabinet in Malta’s modern history. This is the fundamental difference between this government and the previous administrations over the last 40 years,” he said.

As it stands, the only females in cabinet are Reforms Junior Minister Rosianne Cutajar and Tourism Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli. Justyne Caruana had been part of it, but resigned after revelations that her husband, a police assistant commissioner, had travelled abroad with murder suspect Yorgen Fenech.

Since then, former MEP Miriam Dalli has entered local politics and become an MP. She is expected to form part of the cabinet in the upcoming reshuffle. Some key current cabinet members, like Finance Minister Edward Scicluna, are expected to be ousted.

“With us, you know where you stand,” Abela went on to say. “We don’t put our heads in the sand and say ‘no one can touch us’. We aren’t arrogant. We believe in humility.”

He went on to say that he believes the youth as well as the growing female voice in the Labour Party would be major factors in Maltese politics in the near future.

“I don’t want to see youths working in the peripheries anymore,” he said, urging them to contest the general election.

While an exact date for the reshuffle has yet to be given, it is expected to take place imminently.
