Robert Aquilina has announced his immediate resignation from Repubblika after it emerged that the police are investigating him over an alleged domestic violence incident.

Aquilina denied doing anything wrong, but said he is resigning as a Repubblika member and as its honorary president to safeguard his family’s privacy and not allow people to use his case to target the NGO.

He has also suspended his involvement in Fondazione Falcone.

“I won’t repeat what I told the police in public out of a sense of respect and love towards the privacy of my relatives,” he said.

“All I will say is that the duty magistrate refused to order an arrest warrant against me, as the police commissioner requested.”

“After speaking to the police, I was also sent home with my family. These facts are significant in such cases.”

“However, I must note that the police force – under Angelo Gafa – had no problem with leaking private information to third parties, so much so that photographers were waiting for as I walked into the depot.”

“In the past months and years, our marriage has gone through some very rocky periods and with a heavy heart, I can announce that we will walk our separate ways.”

“Just as I have always respected the privacy of others, I ask that my family’s privacy be respected in these hard times, even out of respect to our there young children.”
