Roberta Metsola: Daphne Caruana Galizia Should Have Been Protected

EU President Roberta Metsola has deplored the events that led to the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia more than 2,000 days ago, saying that she should have been protected.
“More than 2,000 days have passed since that dark Monday afternoon when Daphne Caruana Galizia’s life was taken away in the most brutal of ways,” Metsola said on World Press Freedom Day.
“We have legislated, we have demanded answers, we have scrutinised.”
“The European Parliament remains committed to its calls for justice, for the respect of the rule of law, and for media freedom.”
“From when Daphne last spoke with her husband and her sons, from when she last visited her parents, from when she last called her sisters, from when she uploaded her last blog a few minutes before she was blown up outside her home.”
“Everything was taken away that afternoon. Everything except her stories, the investigations she had started, the truth she wanted to reveal.”
“Because if Daphne’s revelations reverberated throughout the country, her death caused an earthquake that shook the foundations of Europe.”
“On days like these – as today we mark #WorldPressFreedomDay – I think about all those times that she was attacked, threatened, harassed, ridiculed, made fun of, and the subject of targeted character assassination. She should have never had to go through all of this. She should have been protected.”
“Daphne’s assassination – followed by that of Ján Kuciak a few weeks later. It has led to important changes. We have legislated, we have demanded answers, we have scrutinised. And we will not stop here.”
