‘Don’t Be Defined By Those That Underestimate You,’ Roberta Metsola Tells Younger Self For International Day Of The Girl
On the International Day of the Girl, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola reflected on one question: “What would you tell younger you if you had the chance?”
“Someone asked me what I would tell the young version of myself if I had the chance. It made me wonder,” Metsola wrote on social media.
Uploading two photos of herself, one when she was still a young girl, and one now, as a successful politician in an important role, Metsola expressed her thoughts.
“I would tell her that she knows more than she thinks. That she would be pigeon-holed and underestimated but it shouldn’t define her,” Metsola said.
“That her voice is louder than she can imagine and that she could use it to speak out for those whose voice is silenced. That she would have to fight but she will find the strength. That glass ceilings exist to be smashed,” she continued.
“Then I realised I could be speaking to every girl I’d ever known. That girls across the world face similar challenges,” she said.
“And I promised myself again that I will keep working so that I would never have to say the same things to the generation that comes after me.”
International Day of the Girl was celebrated yesterday, Tuesday 11th October, with this year’s theme stressing that girls all over the world deserve better.
