Romanian Prince Paul-Philippe Arrested And Detained In Malta Over Corruption Charges

Paul-Philippe of Romania, a prince wanted for corruption, was arrested yesterday and has been detained in Malta upon visiting the country for an event organised by the Knights of Malta.
According to the Times of Malta, the prince left his country back in 2020 after being sentenced to almost three and a half years in prison for falsely claiming ownership of real estate near Bucharest.
Romania’s High Court uncovered that the illegal restitution and sale of the land cost the country more than €145 million.
The 75-year-old prince was arrested thanks to a European Arrest Warrant, and was denied bail. According to his lawyer Jason Azzopardi, the prince was humiliated in front of influential European people during his arrest. Azzopardi also stated that the documents presented against the prince were “politically motivated”.
Azzopardi also put forward proof of decisions made by the courts in Paris last year, claiming the arrest warrant was invalid. He stated that France, being a serious European country, dealt with such an illegal request for the prince’s arrest, hinting at that fact that Malta should do the same.
