Rosianne Cutajar: Even Though I Didn’t Break A Single Law, I Didn’t Want To Be A Burden

Independent MP Rosianne Cutajar has opened up about her decision to resign from the PL’s parliamentary group, insisting that while she didn’t break a single law she didn’t want to be a burden on her party.

In a public message to her supporters, Cutajar said she believed she had already shouldered political responsibility over her chats with murder suspect Yorgen Fenech when she resigned as Parliamentary Secretary for Equality in 2021 and that the chats recently leaked by Mark Camilleri revealed “nothing new”.

However, she said “pressure was imposed on her” to shoulder political responsibility for a second time, although she wasn’t given a clear answer as to why.

This is her message in full:

“Two years ago I shouldered political responsibility and paid a political price by resigning from my position as Parliamentary Secretary, even though I didn’t break a single law.”

“I continued working in the PL, without a sense of arrogance, and was approved as a candidate where I was elected to Parliament with around 2,200 first-count votes, the second highest a woman has ever obtained.”

“I continued working and contributing to the party without any expectations, even though I felt there was a chance that I would be unjustly overlooked for a Cabinet position.”

“Two weeks ago, an inhumane, vindictive and personal attack took place against me, where a person broke a court’s orders and fled the nation. This attack was publicly condemned as cruel, timed at a particular moment in my life, and nothing new came out of it.”

“All of a sudden, after the usual insistence by a few people, pressure was imposed on me to shoulder some kind of political responsibility for the second time. I asked what changed but I was left without an answer.”

“I didn’t want to be a burden to anyone, which is why – with a heavy heart – I must inform you that I will no longer remain part of the PL parliamentary group. However, I will continue serving as an independent MP, with freedom but consistency to PL principles. I will be vociferous, present and available to the people.”

“I will also spend more time taking care of my health, my new family and, why not, advancing in my professional career, something I was denied of the past 13 years. Finally, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for being there for me in these tough times.”
