Local environmental NGO Rota has called on authorities to take action after another cyclist was involved in an alleged hit-and-run in the limits of Żebbuġ.

On 13th December, a 24-year-old Colombian cyclist ended up fighting for his life after he was allegedly hit by a car that fled the scene.

Speaking with Lovin Malta today, a police representative confirmed that the cyclist is still in critical condition, and police have not yet made any advancements in the investigation.

“Rota is saddened and deeply concerned by the news of an individual commuting by bicycle being involved in a hit-and-run collision,” Rota said in a statement following the incident.

“The cyclist is in a critical state. This should never have happened. Each time someone uploads that Instagram story while driving or double parks for a quick errand, other road users are being placed in harm’s way.”

“We have repeatedly called on the Authorities for better infrastructure, increased enforcement, and a widespread educational campaign. However, this keeps falling on deaf ears.”

“How many more collisions need to happen? How many more lives need to be drastically changed and cut short? We need change, and we need it now. This does not stop here.”

The NGO has been an instrumental voice in bringing about change to Malta’s infrastructure, focused on bicycle advocacy.
