Sandro Chetcuti: ‘I Advised My Son Not To Become Malta Development Association CEO’

Sandro Chetcuti said he had advised his son Leon not to put his name up for the position of Malta Development Association CEO.
“He had studied law, was working at a legal firm, and was good and promising,” Chetcuti told Lovin Malta. “My advice to him was to keep focusing on what he had studied for, which was law. However, at the end of the day, he’s not a child and he makes his own decisions.”
Chetcuti, who had co-founded the MDA some 13 years ago, insisted he won’t interfere in his son’s role although he will be available for advice should it be requested.

Leon Chetcuti, a 26-year-old lawyer, raised eyebrows and nepotism concerns when he was appointed CEO, given his father’s history as founder and former president of the MDA.
The full-time CEO role is a position that had been vacant for years but that the MDA had put out a call for to relieve some of the pressure off the shoulders of its president Michael Stivala.
A number of candidates applied for the position but the MDA council unanimously agreed to give it to Leon Chetcuti, who had recently been appointed to the council himself after receiving the second-highest number of votes in an internal election.
Stivala said that despite Chetcuti’s young age, he believes he is worthy of the position of CEO as he has a combination of energy and legal experience in the property industry.
