Shadow Education Minister Justin Schembri played down proposals to install metal detectors or deploy former soldiers at schools in response to the recent stabbing incident.

“A lot is being said about security and discipline at schools,” Schembri said.

“Some are mentioning metal detectors, some are mentioning soldiers, and some are mentioning other things.”

“But let’s remember that schools are schools and should remain places that develop children academically and beyond, with a sense of love, respect and the fun of childhood and teenage years.”

Schembri urged people to keep the staff and students at St Clare’s College in Pembroke in mind.

“Their entire community is under shock and is doing its best to get back on its feet and pick up the pieces of what it has built over the years,” he said.

He added that while there’s a lot that must be done to improve discipline, this mustn’t take the form of collective punishment.
