Screenshots Show Pro-Life Maltese Doctors Referring Patients To UK For Abortion, Pro-Choice Activist Claims
Evidence exists that at least pro-life doctors in Malta had referred their patients to the UK for an abortion, pro-choice activist Andrea Dibben has claimed.
“As I said on Andrew Azzopardi’s programme, there are at least three of these doctors who have sent various people to UK and signed the academics position paper,” Dibben said, referring to a document signed by around 80 academics, medical professionals and journalists against the proposed abortion bill.
“We have clear evidence, including referral letters and screenshots of conversations with patients.”
Dibbem told these doctors that while she won’t “name and shame” them, their patients know who they are and are upset at the situation.
“And no, I will not tiptoe around this issue anymore because these doctors are happy for their patients to fork out over €6,500 for a termination abroad as long as they save their reputation with the establishment as ‘pro-life’ and ‘holier than thou’. I am sorry, but I don’t tiptoe around hypocrites.”
Earlier today, Labour Party President Ramona Attard suggested that some doctors who signed a petition against the bill had recommended mothers to terminate their pregnancies overseas.
“Perhaps they issued this advice to help the mother out or for reasons only they themselves know, even though it was illegal.”
“If people in that list had recommended abortions overseas, the least they could have done was to not be dishonest with themselves, even for the sake of their own professional credibility with their patients,” she said.
Pro-choice group Doctors for Choice backed up her statement, saying that some of these patients have contacted them in disgust.
“Yes, some of those doctors opposing this law have referred patients overseas for abortions,” they said.
“These patients then have had to pay several thousand euro to get the care they need, while their doctor campaigns for the procedure to remain illegal in Malta. We know this because patients of these doctors have contacted us in disgust and told us this.”
