Sea Trips Between Malta And Gozo Surge In Last Quarter Carrying Over 1.7 Million Passengers

The second quarter of this year saw a significant increase in sea trips between Malta and Gozo, according to a report published by the National Statistics Office (NSO).

The period from April to June registered 11,159 sea trips, ferrying a total of 1.72 million passengers.

This substantial uptick represents a 7.9% increase in trips and a 16.6% rise in passengers compared to the same period last year. There was also a 4% increase in vehicle transportation.

June emerged as the busiest month, accounting for 35% of total trips.

Focusing on the sea route between Mġarr and Ċirkewwa, the NSO reported over 1.54 million passengers during the second quarter of this year, a 14% increase from the second quarter of 2022.

April recorded the highest number of passengers at 528,924, contributing to 34.3% of the total for the quarter.

The data revealed a pattern in peak travel days. For passenger traffic originating from Ċirkewwa, Saturdays and Fridays were the busiest days, while in terms of vehicle traffic, Fridays and Saturdays saw the most activity.

At the Mġarr terminal, Sundays and Saturdays were the most crowded for passenger traffic, with Sundays and Mondays attracting the most vehicle traffic.

The sea route between Mġarr and Valletta also witnessed a surge in activity during Q2 . A total of 2,254 sea trips were conducted, carrying 182,787 passengers.

This is a 35.5% increase in trips and a 44.6% surge in passengers compared to the same period the previous year.
