Search For Homeless Maltese Couple In Birkirkara Underway As YMCA Appeal For Public’s Help Locating Them

A search is underway to find a homeless couple that took to social media this week to lament how a public garden in Birkirkara had become their new home.

“We have space for them at the YMCA – they can call our shelter directly on 27675278, and not just them, but anyone who is roofless or knows of someone who is roofless,” YMCA CEO Anthony Camilleri told Lovin Malta.

And it’s not just the YMCA team.

Caritas also contacted Lovin Malta and sent people to Stazzjon Gardens, Birkirkara, in an attempt to find Rayther Vella and his wife. However, the pair have yet to be found.

Both support organisations are appealing to the public to let them know where they can find the couple to find out more and potentially help them find a roof over their head, or pass on the organisation’s numbers so they can contact them themselves.

The story of Rayther Vella and his wife went viral across Malta when it was revealed by Lovin Malta on Wednesday, with support groups like YMCA and Caritas immediately stepping in to find the couple within Stazzjon Gardens in Birkirkara and offer them temporary shelter.

In a video uploaded to social media, Vella couldn’t help but speak about the couple’s situation.

“Look at what we’ve fallen into. Can’t even find a place to rent, with sky-high rents wherever you look – plus, some landlords don’t even rent to Maltese people.”

“Shameful, and no one cares at all. If there’s someone who wants to join us tonight, they can come and stay with us, and I’ll tell them thank you – because tonight, this is where we’ll be.”
