The annual programme for the vaccination against the flu as well as the booster for the Omicron variant has been rolled out.

From Monday, 17th October, people over the age of 55 as well as vulnerable people can visit their local health centres and other dedicated locations to receive the two jabs, Health Minister Chris Fearne said today.

From 22nd October, children above the age of six months can begin receiving the jabs as well. Fearne noted that children above the age of 2 can avoid receiving the jabs and can instead be given a nasal spray for the flu.

And from 31st October, the vaccination programme will be opened to the entire population.

Around 132,000 doses of the flu vaccine have been obtained by the government.

Superintendent of Public Health Charmaine Gauci noted that internationally, the flu season had started earlier than usual.

She said that for every 100 people visiting a doctor, eight of them will have symptoms similar to those found in the flu.
