Seed Paper Bookmarks With Workers’ Rights Now Being Given To New Parents In Malta
A new state initiative promoting workers’ rights will see new parents receive a seed paper bookmark featuring all rights printed on it in an easy-to-read display.
The new rights, which came into effect on 2nd August, include ten days of paternity leave, two months of paid parental leave, five days of carers leave and the right for flexible working arrangements.
As part of the promotion of these new rights, new bookmarks were created and will be given to new parents on the birth of their child.
As things stand, parents are given a “Sustainable Baby Box” targeting a number of Sustainable Development Goals.
As of this month, the Sustainable Baby Box has started including the seed paper bookmarks. After the bookmark has been used or read, it can then be cut into small pieces and planted sprouting herbs, flowers, or both.
“What we’ve done is we’ve planted a seed that we would like to see growing into a tree one day,” a Spokesperson from the Parliamentary Secretariat for Social Dialogue said.
The new rights have caused disagreement between social partners, with some stating they don’t go far enough. In light of that, Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul has stated these new rights must be upheld and enhanced as time goes by.
