‘Seriously, Why?’: Għar Lapsi Seaside Ramp Upgrade Blasted For ‘Black Tarmac Obsession’

A Facebook post celebrating a recent Għar Lapsi seaside ramp upgrade has come under fire – and people are not happy about it.
“Wow, well done you finally did it, you managed to completely ruin Għar Lapsi. It will be lovely once all the fish are gone thanks to this idiotic and pointless piece of work,” one Facebook user commented.
The Siġġiewi mayor Dominic Grech, updated the community by posting a few photos of the tarmacked road onto social media.
“These works will be completed in a couple of days, so that everyone can enjoy this beautiful bay again, in a secure way, this summer.”
However, it clearly backfired.
“Yes, vehicles with boats use the path, but there was no need for tarmac. It will eventually raise the temperature in the summer heat in a drastic manner. Plenty of other options could have been chosen, and one could have easily reinstated what there was. A light coloured surface finish to compliment the beautiful bay with a good grip for access for all,” another Facebook user said.
Many agreed, pointing out that the surrounding areas are designated as Nature2000 sites – the highest level of protection offered to Malta’s countryside.

Grech reiterated that the work was carried out with all the necessary permits in place, and due to the fact the ramp had been heavily damaged.
But the comebacks continued.
“Seriously, is this true? It’s truly alarming the lack of awareness in this country. Do you know how damaging this can be, when the rainwater drains and carries pollutants and toxins into the sea? So, is it just pure ignorance? All of this for the convenience of a few people using their cars?” another Facebook user said.
From hating on the ugly aesthetic that the ‘black, horrible tarmac’ brought to the area, to commenting on the damage it will cause, many were not having it.
