Seven ‘Urgent’ Cancer Patients Being Flown To Rome For Treatment Following Radiotherapy Fault In Mater Dei

Seven urgent cancer patients are to be flown to Rome on Wednesday for their treatment due to a fault in Malta’s radiotherapy machines.
The Health Ministry confirmed with Lovin Malta that they will be sending the patients there tomorrow to receive their treatment.
The Ministry will also be paying for the flights and accommodation for the patients, as well as for an accompanying person.
“MDH is contacting all affected individuals and informing them how their treatment will be affected, if at all, obviously as discussed and agreed to with their consultants,” the spokesperson told Lovin Malta.
This comes after radiotherapy services at Mater Dei Hospital had to be temporarily suspended following technical damage to linear accelerators at the oncology department.
In a statement, the Health Ministry said that an inquiry board has been set up to establish what caused the damage.
The Ministry said from preliminary investigations, it appears that the issue comes from the system to cool the machines. The damage to the machines is repairable and is already underway.
