People gathered at the Valletta memorial to Daphne Caruana Galizia last night and wrote birthday cards to the slain journalist to commemorate what would have been her 54th birthday.
Cards were handed out with a photo of Caruana Galizia and a quote of hers: “It’s true that life is unfair and much of it can’t be helped. But where I can do anything to avoid unfairness or to set it straight then I will”.
They were also stamped with the words: ‘She needed a hero so that’s what she became’.
Here are some of the birthday cards that people left at the memorial.
This one is from press freedom group Reporters Without Borders.
This one is from German journalist Frederick Obermaier, renowned for breaking the Panama Papers
This one is from PN MEP Roberta Metsola
And this powerful message is from cartoonist Seb Tanti Burlo

An estimated 100 people, including relatives of the late journalist, turned up to the event, which was organised by activist group Il-Kenniesa. Only a few politicians were present, namely PN MEP David Casa and MPs Jason Azzopardi and Beppe Fenech Adami.
