‘She Would Be 60 Today’: Malta Remembers Karin Grech On 45th Anniversary Of Unsolved Murder
With today marking the 45th anniversary of the brutal killing of then-15-year-old Karin Grech, Malta is commemorating her memory.
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola issued a tribute to Karin this morning marking the anniversary, saying that “today we remember Karin – an innocent victim in the peak of her life”.
“Karin would have been 60 today. Such horrifying events like these remind us that justice and the search for truth should never be postponed,” Metsola wrote.
“Time does not heal, nor does it make you forget,” she said.
Prime Minister Robert Abela also commemorated her memory, simply saying that “we will never forget Karin”.
“45 years have passed since the political killing of Karin Grech. A 15-year-old teenager was killed because of a political divide,” Minister Miriam Dalli wrote on social media.
“After all these years, I can only hope that we take the lesson that politics should never divide us,” she said.
Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms Rebecca Buttigieg also said that the event ended up leaving a negative impact on our story as Maltese people, adding that her memory will always remain alive in our thoughts.
PN candidate Alex Perici Calascione referred to the case of Karin Grech as one that will always leave a stain on the history of the country.
On 28th December 1977, a brown envelope containing a package in Christmas wrapping was posted to Prof. Edwin Grech at his San Ġwann home. Karin spotted it, assumed it was a late Christmas present, and opened it up.
However, the ‘present’ turned out to be a bomb, which exploded in Karin’s face in front of her brother’s eyes, dying in the hospital half an hour later. The case remains unsolved.
RIP Karin Grech
