Police have evacuated around 80 migrants from the former La Paloma Hotel in St Paul’s Bay in a major operation this morning.

According to TVM, over five migrants used to share a room and each used to pay the property’s owner €200 a month each. The migrants were found with Italian documents, meaning they had achieved some sort of status in Italy which would have allowed them to travel to another EU country for up to three months.

It is unknown at this stage whether these people were working in Malta, which would have been against the law.
