Palermo mayor Leoluca Orlando and former EU Parliament president Antonio Tajani will address a protest in Valletta on 16th October to mark the second anniversary of the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Italian priest and anti-mafia activist Luigi Ciotti, former PN candidate Norman Vella, university theatre lecturer Vicky Ann Cremona, young activist Martina Farrugia and Reporters Without Borders UK Bureau director Rebecca Vincent will also speak at the event.

The protest will commence at around 7pm outside the St Francis of Assisi Church in Republic Street, right after a mass for the murdered journalist, and proceed towards the law courts.

“I urge you to encourage your family and friends to come,” an activist from the pressure group Repubblika told a small crowd yesterday at a vigil for Caruana Galizia. “We must send a united message that this country isn’t ready to accept the assassination of a journalist as though it were nothing, that full justice must be delivered and that it’s scandalous that adequate efforts aren’t being taken to bring the masterminds of the murder to justice.”

Two lectures about Caruana Galizia will also be held in the run-up to the anniversary. On 11th October, English literature Professor Ivan Callus will deliver a lecture about Caruana Galizia’s writing style, and on 14th October La Republika journalist Carlo Bonini will address the ‘Daphne Caruana Galizia Memorial’ lecture.
