Simon Busuttil Speaks Out About Online Threat: ‘This Meme Crossed The Line Even For Me’

Former leader of the Opposition Simon Busuttil has clarified why he took issue with a distasteful image that appeared to show the man buried in a grave, with his partner Kristina crying besides him.

Having been in the political and public eye for years, Dr Busuttil has developed a thick skin. However, earlier today he posted a particular image that he has deemed to have crossed the line, and he explained why to Lovin Malta.

“I have to say that I have often been on the receiving end of highly distasteful memes, some even with sexual connotations. But I never react because I know that when you are in public life, this is par for the course. However, this meme crossed the line even for me. More so because it also put Kristina into the picture unnecessarily,” he said.

“That said, I feel overwhelmed by the strong and spontaneous reactions of support and solidarity from the public and I am lost for words. I often ask myself, why am I still struggling for corrupt people in power to be brought to justice when they are using state institutions to protect themselves. And I inevitably conclude that I owe it to the thousands of people who have placed their trust in me. I cannot let them down,” he continued.

He also clarified where he originally found the image

“I came across this image on a comment that was posted in reply to my tweet yesterday on the Egrant inquiry report (page 1,427) which was the first time that a judicial authority confirmed that Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri did indeed open a secret company in Panama whilst in office. This should have led to their immediate dismissal and investigation. Instead the Police are investigating those who fought against corruption,” he said.
