Sorry to rain on everyone’s parade and ruin the only good news of the week, but as it turns out Peter the sniffer dog didn’t actually help lead police to the middleman in the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder probe.

Sources close to the investigation have confirmed that Peter was in no way involved in the discovery of Melvin Theuma.

Shortly after Theuma was named as the alleged middleman in the murder probe, Peter the sniffer dog was named as the four-legged friend who had led police to him.

But Lovin Malta has since been informed that while Peter did sniff out a huge amount of cash that day, the concurrent investigation was not what lead police to Theuma.

The suspect had never mentioned Theuma when questioned. Operations to pin down Theuma had been underway weeks before the incident had occurred at the airport.

Theuma had been identified as the middleman back in May of 2018, and he was subsequently arrested for money laundering in connection with an alleged illegal lottery setup, but sources have confirmed that the plan was always made to arrest him in connection to Daphne’s murder.

It was believed that once Theuma was arrested and questioned, he would then spill further details to police – in particular, the name of Yorgen Fenech who has since been arrested and charged in court for conspiring to kill the journalist. Fenech pleaded not guilty and investigations are still ongoing.
