The Office of the Commissioner for Children has expressed its concern about the current situation at St Albert the Great College in Valletta, warning it is effecting students negatively.

“The uncertainty that children are currently facing is not in their best interest. Following two years of disruption caused by COVID-19, children should not be put in such a situation, which is causing great stress and anxiety among children and parents,” the Commissioner warned.

“Children have a right to start a new scholastic year in a serene and welcoming environment. Therefore, the Office urges all parties concerned to find an immediate solution in the best interests of all the students,” it said.

This comes after the months of confusion and uncertainty that parents and children attending the school have been passed through, following the dismissal of former headmaster Mario Mallia.

Mallia was dismissed from his position at St Albert The Great earlier this summer, sparking national backlash.

Over the last few weeks, more than eight educators have resigned from St Albert The Great College, following the dismissal of former headmaster Mario Mallia.

Parents have also spoken out about the situation, lamenting the lack of organisation and fearful of their children’s future.

Just last week, Horace Gauci was announced as the new headmaster of the college, former mayor of Marsaxlokk and an educator by profession.

The Curia has also announced it is preparing a contingency plan in case the college is not in a position to function next week.

St Albert The Great College has also accused the Malta Union of Teachers of “recklessly sabotaging” efforts to kick off the upcoming scholastic year.
